GETTING STARTED!

REGISTERING

Before you can start using this web-site you'll need to register as a member.

You will have VERY limited browsing ability without registering - most of the contents and services will NOT be available to you until you do.

Registering | My Patch | My Profile | GoTo  | Friends | Groups | The Wire | MessagingFilesPagesVideosPhotosBlogs

1.   How do I register?

You will then be taken to this page. You will need to fill out all 5 fields.

If you correctly entered all the details you will get a green confirmation banner appearing at the top of the page.

You will now need to check your e-mail inbox. You should receive a message that looks like this:

Obviously it will show the display name that you chose and not "PotatoHead"!

Simply click on the link to confirm that your e-mail is correct to validate your account. The link will take you back to the site where you can login and start using the site SIMPLE!

2. After Registering

You'll be taken to this page. This is your personal console that gives you access to all parts of the web-site. It's called "MY PATCH" (a well recognised, and borrowed, gardening term!). You'll be taken to this page each time you login. To go to it at any other time simply click on "My Patch" which is permanently shown in the "tool bar" at the top of all the web-site's pages.

This page is personally customisable by you. By clicking on EDIT PAGE you can choose what is displayed here.

When you go there initially - after you have registered - it will be populated with the default widgets - these are those boxes with titles like Pages, Group Membership, Recent Bookmarks etc. shown below. They all show information relevant to the title of the box.

You can now drag and drop which "widgets" you would like displayed in your personal "My Patch" page. To do this you simply drag the individual tool "widget" (in the Widget gallery) into whichever column of the page that you want the information displayed in future. When you're happy click on "Save". Your member profile "My Patch" page will now be updated.

3 My Profile

Your profile will need to be edited after registering. This is important, because it's your identity on the Gardeners CHAT-SHED web-site that others can access to know a little bit about you. You can fill in as much or as little as you like. It's a also a good idea to upload a picture for your icon (sometimes referred to as an "avatar") as others will recognise you from seeing that icon in other areas of the site.

To access your PROFILE PAGE simply select "My Profile" from the main menu tab or you can click on the default icon on the top tool bar. Up on the top-bar there is a small image away to the left. Until you upload your personal icon graphic it will be a grey silhouette image.

Clicking on My Profile or the top tool bar icon will take you to your profile page where you can do a number of things which change the look of your profile. These include

  • Inserting a personal icon (avatar)

  • Change the look of the profile page

  • Edit the information about you for display to other users

4 The "GoTo" Menu

Wherever you are on the site you can hover over the "GoTo"  label on the top tool bar and a drop down menu will appear that allows you to "jump" to any other section of the site that you want to view.

Some of the items in the drop down menu can also be accessed from the tabs in the main menu bar.

5 Friends

You can make any member a "friend". This is an important aspect of the site, because once you make someone your friend it allows you to chat, send messages, view your friends files, pages, videos etc. You will also be automatically informed by e-mail each time one of your friends has contributes anything on the site. you can have as many friends as you like.

To add a member to your friends list siply click on the member's icon. you will then be taken to their profile page where you can select "ADD FRIEND" from the list below the member's icon picture.

You can also hover over a member icon and click on the down arrow that appears in the bottom right hand corner of the icon. This will open a drop-down menu you can select what you want to do from that menu - including adding that member to your friends list.

6 Groups

If you imagine the web-site as a large building with lots of individual rooms then you'll get the idea of what a "Group" is. Each room within the building would represent a "Group" or if you like a little club that you can join that meets in a room. You can join any group that you like. Once you've joined you can contribute photos, videos, take part in discussions, upload files and pages to that group. You can also start a group of your own and invite other members to join it. You can make your group available to anyone, just logged in members or just your personal friends.

This is a Twitter-like feature. It allows you to put a quick message on the site that's seen by all.
